About This Spot

Step into Maureen’s Brixton Kitchen, and you’re immediately welcomed by a warm, bustling nook tucked into the lively streets of Brixton. This is more than just a Jamaican restaurant—it’s a place where the aromas of slow-cooked spices and smoky jerk seasoning blend effortlessly with genuine smiles and heartfelt greetings. The pace here feels unhurried but purposeful, a reflection of kitchens that move with deep knowledge and care rather than haste.

Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and inviting. With limited seating that fills quickly, the space encourages a sense of community—whether it’s regulars sharing laughter or newcomers savoring their first taste of authentic Caribbean flavors. The hum of conversation, the clink of cutlery against bowls brimming with rich, comforting dishes, and the occasional flash of a lively exchange among the team behind the counter create a truly human moment that goes beyond a typical dining experience.

The menu offers a heartfelt journey through Jamaican home cooking—meals that feel like a celebration of tradition and family. Think of tender oxtail mingling with fragrant rice and peas, creamy mac and cheese that’s both indulgent and familiar, and jerk chicken where each bite carries a gentle heat balanced by the freshness of a crisp salad or a bright fruit punch. It’s the kind of food that invites you to slow down and savor the layers of flavor, knowing that each dish is prepared with love and respect for heritage.

Maureen’s stands out not just for its vibrant dishes, but for the care woven into every moment—from the kitchen to the table. It’s a rare gathering spot where quality and community converge, making each visit feel like a shared celebration of food, culture, and simple pleasures.

I’d seen videos of Maureen’s Brixton Kitchen all over social media and decided to see if it lived up to the hype. It absolutely did! The food was incredibly delicious — perfectly seasoned, full of flavor, and clearly made with love. I had the chance to chat with the beautiful ladies who prepared my meal and congratulated them on the quality of their food. You can truly taste the passion and care in every bite. The space is a bit tight, and the seating may not be the most comfortable for someone on the bigger side like me — but they make it work, and the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Ladies, I’ll definitely be back on my next trip to London!

One of the best Caribbean food spots in entire London. Took the 3 meat platter and mac n cheese, did not disappoint. Oxtail was outstanding. The fruit punch was banging too

Best Jamaican food I’ve had in London. Food was piping hot. Can’t say any more than that. I had the jerk chicken, curry chicken and tried some of my friend’s curry goat as well as some fried chicken. Every dish was phenomenal. I would say though because it’s so popular the wait does take a little bit but the wait was absolutely worth it. There wasn’t much seating but we were able to grab a seat.

Best food in London, not just the best Jamaican food! Have visited three times and each time I’m more impressed, the food is just stunning, great value, fast and super friendly service, five mins walk from Brixton tube station, couldn’t recommend more!! Last visit I finally got the platter, choice of 3 meats, served with choice of white rice or rice and peas, mac & cheese, steamed veg, fried plantain, and coleslaw, all for £20, absolutely incredible value. Got curry goat, brown stew chicken and oxtail, all so tender and tasty, super fresh tasting. Each portion of meat was a full portion, huge amount of rice, which was fluffy and fresh too, no clumping up or broken rice. It is easily enough to share between two or even three, but managed to eat the whole thing myself cos it was so delicious, and didn’t need to eat the rest of the day, can’t wait to go back. Also managed to get some of the rare jerk pork as they only serve it on Friday and have been told they sell out, so make sure to sample if you can, so tasty, and full box on its own for just £5. Don’t miss out on the homemade pineapple punch too, £3 for a bottle, served perfectly icy, so packed with flavour and ginger, worth the trip for that alone.

Amazing food. I traveled up from Birmingham for an event and had to stop by. Curry goat was tender and the jerk chicken fell apart in your mouth. Would highly recommend this place

What a gem, the food is incredible and the service is amazing! It has such a wonderful community atmosphere, and everyone who served us was so lovely and kind! The curry goat and oxtail were so delicious, and great value too for the price!

Tourist review - Maureen’s kitchen serves stunning Jamaican food with a lovely community vibe. Got the oxtail with rice and fish with rice and beans - both were super flavourful and the best Jamaican food I had while in London. Highly recommended and definitely lived up to the hype! Some food items on the menu sell out, but otherwise can’t fault this place, would come back!

I took the large size with my friends and could not finish it. It s a huge portion good enough for 2 people. The food was excellently cooked, both the rice and chicken. However, the Jerk chicken had no real spice. When i try jerk chicken i expect real kick in the sauce which was not there. The lack of fire is the only reason i gave this 4 out of 5. If it had that kick it easily gets 5. Staff are courtious, generous and friendly but seating limited.
